i once knew

there was a verse i once knew
scrawled in a lowly underpass
	beckoning weary scholars to seek
	the light and joy ahead
	breaking forth upon the lake

the words brought peaceful contemplation
but no more, for it has been thrice forgotten
	once, by the taggers, the hooligans, the ruffians
		making their mark the more prominent;
	once, by the city, intent on restoring order,
		regardless of what beauty lay underneathe;
	once, by time immemorial
		the endless weathering and erosion
		of all that is no longer

how much longer shall it linger in my mind, until
	it too fades to memory
		of a brighter day? or a darker night?
